WHISPERS OF TRANSCENTIA
EXHIBITION AND CASEWORK
ITHACA, NY
FALL 2024
PROFESSOR: HANNA TULIS AND MARC MCQUADE
PARTNER: MAURICIO WOLDENBERG
This project reimagines the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell, drawing from its adjacency to a serene Japanese garden and procession of darkness to light. The exhibition explores the theme of ephemerality through four carefully curated artworks that reflect the transient nature of memory, perception, and existence. Marc Chagall’s In My Country evokes the fluidity of memory and nostalgia, while Rachel Whiteread’s resin casts of negative space illuminate the emotional resonance of everyday objects. These contemplative pieces are complemented by the experiential works of Harry Bertoia’s Sounding Sculptures, whose auditory textures shift with movement, and delicate daguerreotypes, which capture fleeting moments through light imprinted on silver-plated copper.
The detailed casework designed for each piece not only meets protective and durability requirements but also amplifies the concept of impermanence. Through materials, forms, and finishes, the display elements reflect the transitory qualities of the artworks, becoming an integral part of the exhibition’s narrative. Together, this immersive journey invites viewers to reflect on the impermanence of time and self.
