This project reinterprets Carlo Scarpa's intervention at Castelvecchio by deepening its connection to water and Venice's micro-urbanism. Scarpa’s layered restoration juxtaposes historic elements with modern forms, emphasizing light, materiality, and the passage of time. Building upon these principles, my design envisions the central courtyard as a flooded plane, transforming the space into a sequence of sensory galleries interconnected by waterways and bridges. Drawing from Venice’s interplay of canals and islands, the galleries explore human perception through water’s transformative qualities. Visitors move from light-filled spaces in the Color Gallery, featuring pieces such as Rachel Whiteread’s resin casts, to the Sound Gallery, where the human ear height is brought to the water level, and finally descend to the submerged Underwater Gallery, where shifting light filters through organic installations. The procession culminates in the Dark Gallery, evoking the depth and darkness of being underwater. This final intervention reconnects Castelvecchio to its roots in water and Scarpa’s legacy, creating a living, ever-changing experience.
