BUS STOP LIBRARY
ITHACA, NY
SPRING 2021
PROFESSOR: OONAGH DAVIS
Located in Dewitt Park facing N Cayuga St., this bus stop celebrates the historical significance of Ithaca and its particular surroundings. A study of the neighboring area indicates some of the oldest buildings in Ithaca after its settlement in 1789 by Simeon Dewitt. The bus stop library, as a mode of education, incorporates hierarchical modules of steel and slotting to designate areas for book display and storage, gazing out versus sitting in, and a naturally-flowing walkway that corresponds to the ground stepping condition. The ground condition is composed of loam or natural grassy soil that fortifies around the steel and extends upwards on the side that the angular steel slabs lean on, doubling as seating on both ends. Additionally, steel corrosion that will eventually occur as a
result of the moisture in the loam will serve as a symbol of the historicity of Ithaca, while the steel reflectivity in some areas can serve as a symbol of reflection.
